Whether you believe it’s the most important meal or not, a leisurely breakfast is a fun and relaxing way to begin the day. There’s a host of great places to dine outside in the morning to enjoy the warm air, desert sun and delicious food.
Breakfast on a Patio: Cheeky’s
622 N. Palm Canyon, Palm Springs
Don’t try heading here on a weekend unless you’re not at all hungry! Perennial Palm Springs fave Cheeky’s is located on Palm Canyon Drive, and if you drive past, you’ll often see the hordes lining up outside. They’re here because the food is always great, it’s creative, and it’s a beautiful modern setting with a large, shady, outdoor eating area.
The lovely patio overlooks the street to the front, but is sandwiched against a hotel’s greenspace, so it’s lovely and lush. The chairs are comfy, making you want to stay a while, if it weren’t for the pleading looks of those hungry diners in line on the street.
You’ll need to order the “Flight of Bacon,” a plate of bacon cooked with flavourings like Cola, Thai Chili, or Maple Pepper, and more. I still dream about the Blueberry and Corn pancakes I ate here. The coffee is great and you can also snag some baked goods to go too, like home-baked donuts. The menu changes weekly so be prepared to adjust your desires.
Breakfast on a Patio: Sherman’s Deli
401 E Tahquitz Canyon Way, Palm Springs
This is the place to come for deli favourites like lox and bagels, latkes and a mean plate of bacon and eggs. The food at Sherman’s is always fast and fresh and the menu is extensive. It’s often very busy but not Cheeky’s-level busy. Most days you can easily get a seat out from under the awnings and people-watch as you fuel up for the day.
There’s also one heck of a bakery inside so if yo have any need for desserts or pastries, get them on your way out.
Breakfast on a Patio: Norma’s at The Parker
4200 E Palm Canyon Dr, Palm Springs
One of my most favourite places in Palm Springs, this mod kitschy restaurant in the Parker Hotel has some of the most creative food around.
The Norma’s patio is a color cacophony, with beautiful toss cushions, a sunny fabric awning that casts a beautiful glow down on the dining area, and cute retro embroidered placemats. The Bertoia wire chairs add to the modern ambiance. There’s often celebrities to be seen, or at least the very rich Hollywood types, so people watching here is really entertaining. (The girl in the tattered wedding dress and motorcycle jacket that I saw limp in at 8am was certainly memorable!)
Must-try items on the menu include the house made donuts with lemon curd, the mile-high brioche French toast, and one of my favourites, the Artychoked Benny, where tender artichoke hearts replace the English Muffin and tender tiny porcini mushrooms are scattered across the plate.
What’s your favourite outdoor brekkie place? While I love these three, I’m looking to expand my horizons. If you know of a place that should be on our list, let us know! Find us on Twitter @PalmSpringsYes and Instagram @Visit_PalmSprings
